Marriage, Business & Finding Your Lane: What 11 Years Together Has Taught Us

By The Pitkow Team | Husband-and-Wife REALTORS® Serving Montgomery County, Bucks County, Chester County, Delaware County, Berks County & Philadelphia

If you've ever met us, there's a good chance you've asked us this question:

"What's it like working with your spouse?"

It's probably one of the questions we hear most.

The funny thing is... after more than seven years of building a business together, we don't really think about it anymore. It's just our normal.

Today marks four years of marriage, eleven years together, and more than seven years working side by side. Looking back, we realized there was one lesson that's shaped both our marriage and our business more than anything else.

A Look Back at the Last 11 Years

To celebrate our anniversary, we shared a few photos from different chapters of our life together—from college and our wedding day to building The Pitkow Team, becoming parents, and everything in between.

The Best Partnerships Aren't Built by Doing the Same Things

Someone once said:

"The best partnerships aren't built by doing the same things. They're built by trusting each other to do different things well."

That quote has stuck with us because it perfectly describes how we work—and honestly, how we think a lot of successful relationships work.

When we first started in real estate, we naturally tried to do a little bit of everything.

Over time, something changed.

We stopped trying to do the same things.

Instead, we leaned into the things each of us genuinely enjoys.

Sam loves pricing strategy, negotiations, analyzing the market, and helping clients make confident decisions.

Olivia could happily spend hours creating marketing plans, fine-tuning the client experience, organizing timelines, and making sure every detail is covered.

Neither role is more important than the other.

They're just different.

And together, they make us better.

We think that's true in just about every great partnership—whether it's marriage, business, parenting, or friendship.

Why Working Together Makes Us Better REALTORS®

People often assume the biggest benefit of working with a husband-and-wife real estate team is simply having two people.

We actually think it's something else.

It's having two different perspectives.

While one of us is focused on pricing strategy, negotiations, and helping clients make informed decisions, the other is already thinking several steps ahead about marketing, photography, timelines, communication, and making sure every moving piece stays on track.

Instead of one person trying to wear every hat, our clients benefit from two people who genuinely enjoy different parts of the process.

That means more thoughtful planning.

More consistent communication.

More attention to detail.

And ultimately, a better experience from start to finish.

Looking Back, It's Never Just the Big Milestones

When people think back on their lives, it's easy to assume they'll remember the biggest moments first.

The wedding.

The first home.

The new baby.

The big career milestones.

But honestly...

That's not what comes to mind for us.

We remember all the laughing.

The coffee before early morning appointments.

The late-night conversations after the kids were asleep.

The drives between showings.

Celebrating with clients after accepted offers.

Dreaming about what we wanted this business to become.

The ordinary moments are usually the ones that stick.

And maybe that's one of the best reminders we've taken away from the last eleven years—that the seasons you're living right now are often the ones you'll miss the most someday.

What This Has Taught Us About Home

Working in real estate has given us a front-row seat to some of life's biggest milestones.

We've celebrated first homes.

Growing families.

Downsizing after decades in the same house.

Fresh starts.

Retirement.

Job relocations.

Every client reminds us that a home is about so much more than square footage or paint colors.

It's where ordinary life happens.

The birthday parties.

The movie nights.

The kitchen conversations.

The traditions you don't realize you're creating until years later.

Helping people find that place is something we'll never take for granted.

Four Years Married. Eleven Years Together. Still Learning.

If there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's this:

You don't have to be good at the same things.

The strongest partnerships aren't built by doing everything equally.

They're built by trusting each other to do different things well.

That's true in marriage.

It's true in business.

And it's something we're grateful to experience every single day.

Happy anniversary to us.

And thank you to every client, friend, family member, and neighbor who's been part of this journey. We truly wouldn't be here without you.
